Have you ever looked at the ingredients on the back of a box of fruit snacks? Most of the time the first few ingredients includes high fructose corn syrup or sugar along with a ton of other ingredients that are hard to pronounce. Now, I personally LOVE fruit snacks and so does my husband. We will eat fruit snacks like nobody’s business and before I had Ezra, I never really thought about the bad ingredients, but now I have to think about what kind of food I want going into his little body and that stuff is not it. I’m not super uptight about him eating all natural or organic foods because they are not always readily available, but I still try to make as many healthy substitutions as I can. Enter homemade gummies! Ezra absolutely loves these! He will grab handfuls and shove them all in his mouth so I usually have to hand them to him one at a time but they definitely do not last long.
The great thing about this recipe is you can customize it to any flavor you want! I knew I wanted to use Ningxia Red in our gummies to add a big antioxidant boost because Ezra isn’t drinking it straight yet but you can make all kinds of different flavors if you want a variety. It’s super simple and only takes a short time to make, I literally started making these and they were ready to eat an hour later. These gummies are awesome because we are not adding in tons of sugar and we used Great Lakes grass fed unflavored gelatin which is a great source of protein and has all sorts of amazing health benefits! You will not get the same benefits from the cheap gelatin you get at the grocery store because it is extracted differently and doesn’t have all the same nutrients. 1 cup fruit juice (we love orange juice because it goes well with the citrus oils in Ningxia Red!)
4 Tbsp. unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup Ningxia Red
(optional) you can add a tablespoon or so of honey if you want it sweeter, but the fruit juice usually adds enough sweetness
How To Make The Gummies
- Heat the fruit juice over the stove until it starts to bubble, it doesn’t need to be boiling though
- Pour the gelatin into a bowl and pour the heated juice over the gelatin and whisk it briskly until thoroughly dissolved.
- Add remaining ingredients and stir well.
- Pour into the molds and put them in the fridge to cool for an hour.
- enjoy and store in the fridge!
If you want to make it extra fun, you can buy molds in different shapes so they are all different but we chose to just get these simple silicone bear molds and they are super cute! They came in a pack of three and even came with a dropper so they are easy to fill and the gummies just pop right out when they’re done.
I will definitely make these again and I will probably experiment with different juices to accent the Ningxia Red or even add some different essential oils for added benefits. Let me know if you come up with a great blend we have to try!
